Think Ahead host Dragon Boat racing day at Pennington

Wigan and Leigh based charity Think Ahead Community Stroke Group are to host their third annual Dragon Boat race on Friday 13th September at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club on Pennington Flash, with the Dragon Boats provided by Crusaders Dragon Boat Club, Crosby.

8 business and organisations from across the region will be battling it out in an exciting day of Dragon Boat racing, with competitors fighting it out to see who is the fastest and earn a place in the grand finale, where the final victor will be decided.

The event will promote team-building and networking amongst teammates whilst raising much needed funds for the charity, and promises to be an intense battle to beat last year’s runners up, solicitor firm Greenhalgh Kerr, who are back in fighting form this time round.

Daniel Tate of Greenhalgh Kerr and last year’s runners up, said: “It was such a great day last year – so much so that we signed up for another appearance at the very first opportunity.  Everyone in the office wants to be involved.”

“Think Ahead’s Dragon Boat Racing Day is a great way to support a very worthy local cause.  I highly recommend it to any local organisations considering taking part.”

The Dragon Boat racing day will begin at 12 noon, with each boat consisting of 11 people (10 rowers and 1 drummer), and teams from the Wigan Council and ASDA signed up to take part.

Finally, to keep up everyone’s strength and ensure that all of the Dragon Boat Race entrants are well fed a range of refreshments will be provided and Greenhalgh Bakery is also donating 100 of their delicious pies for the event.

“I’m delighted to once again host our annual Dragon Boat racing day for businesses in the community”, said Think Ahead’s Chairman Mike Aspinall.

“It’s fantastic that this has become an established annual event; this is a great opportunity for local businesses to get together, have a fun day out and get to know each other, with this year bigger and better!”

Mike added: “Every year 1,000 people are affected by Stroke locally, half of which may be preventable through things like healthy living and an active life, such as eating well, going for regular exercise, or even taking part in activities like dragon boat racing.”

Think Ahead Community Stroke Group seeks to improve life for Stroke Survivors, their Carers and loved ones across the Wigan and Leigh area through a unique combination of their long term Self Care for Stroke Programme and by hosting a range of activities and excursions for their members.

The Self Care for Stroke Programme is a unique and pioneering initiative specifically designed to provide health and social care, education and support to Stroke Survivors and their Carers.  The programme provides a six week series of weekly sessions focusing on a wide range of topics including: what benefits and support are available, confidence and independence building, healthy living and self care.
