On Tuesday 29th August 2023, the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act, will become law.
The private members bill will affect supported housing providers such as Sustain UK, by setting a framework for new systems and oversite for the industry.
Ian MacGregor, Chief Executive of Sustain UK Ltd said: “Sustain UK is encouraged by the aims of the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act and agrees that action must be taken to ensure minimum standards of housing and support for vulnerable people.
“However, we see the passing of this bill as just the starting point for change, and Sustain UK hopes to participate in the forthcoming consultation and help to shape the details of the oversight, to ensure that it reflects the realities of the market.
“Setting standards is one thing, but we know from our own experiences the time and resources it takes to check and enforce them. In the meantime, more and more people are falling into the vulnerable status and need a safe and secure home.
“For too long, the supported housing market has become a dumping ground for people and properties, and if this bill is to make a significant improvement, then local authorities must have the resources to shut down poor operators and reaccommodate vulnerable people with better providers.”
Sustain UK is a registered provider, housing and supporting 1,800 homeless and vulnerable people in 400 homes across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
