Smart Lighting Set to Become the ‘Brain’ of Modern Buildings, Say Experts

Whitecroft Lighting to Showcase How Next-Generation Building Systems Will Think, Adapt and Make Decisions at Belfast Roadshow on 9th June 2026

Thursday 26th May 2026

Smart lighting is set to become the ‘brain’ of modern buildings within the next decade, according to experts at the UK’s leading commercial lighting manufacturer, Whitecroft Lighting.

On the 9th of June, the company will showcase how intelligent systems are set to transform commercial spaces - such as offices, schools and hospitals - at Belfast’s Titanic Distillers.

The Smart Project’s Roadshow will bring together professionals from construction, innovation and IT, building design and facilities management, to explore how lighting is rapidly evolving from a background utility into a central component of the modern, connected building.

Today, lighting systems already incorporate sensors and controls, but the next wave of innovation will go much further, including:

Lighting that predicts human behaviour - systems will anticipate how spaces will be used, pre-adjusting brightness, colour and layout cues before people even arrive.

· Buildings that are personalised to the individual - lighting will recognise people and automatically tailor environments to their preferences, tasks, and even their circadian rhythms.

· Invisible energy optimisation at scale – self-learning lighting networks that will continuously rebalance energy usage across buildings, cutting carbon and energy without human control.

· ‘Self-healing’ maintenance systems - lighting will detect faults before failure, automatically schedule fixes, and even trigger supply chain responses.

The Smart Project’s Roadshow will explore how smart lighting technology is helping to reshape commercial buildings and infrastructure.

The event will examine how buildings are evolving into more responsive environments, in which sensor networks, control systems, and data platforms interpret and adapt to human activity in real time.

Elements of these technologies are already commercially available, and The Smart Project Roadshow will highlight how they can tackle everyday challenges from delivery and installation through to long-term maintenance and building performance.

This will have far-reaching implications for the likes of mechanical and electrical contractors, consultants, IT, data and innovation leads, designers, and facilities, building, and project managers.

“Lighting technology is moving beyond simple illumination” said Matt Paskin, Solutions and Marketing Director, at Whitecroft Lighting: “Within the next decade, it is set to become the invisible engine of productivity, constantly sensing, learning and adapting to how people use and interact with their space.
“But innovation is as much about evolution as revolution, and significant elements of the technologies that will drive radical change tomorrow are already available and solving real problems today.
Matt concludes: “The Smart Project Roadshow is about sharing what’s possible now, whilst also listening and understanding how innovation can speed up building projects by reducing complexity and friction at every stage.”

Whitecroft Lighting has a long history of lighting buildings in Northern Ireland, and significant recent projects have included Microsoft’s base at Belfast’s City Quays, Belfast City Hospital, St. Ronan's College in Lurgan, and Lakewood Children’s Centre in Bangor.
