Seddon first contractor to sign Construction Charter for Liverpool

Builder and developer Seddon is the first company to sign up to Liverpool’s Construction Charter and take a pledge to help address the construction skills shortage in the city.

The Construction Charter initiative was drawn up by the unions Ucatt, Unite and the GMB with the support of the Liverpool’s Mayor Joe Anderson. It is designed to bring the health, welfare and training of construction workers to the fore and help to stamp out bad practice on construction sites in Liverpool.

Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool said: “We have a bold plan for building 10,000 new homes in Liverpool and to deliver it we have to be working with the best. Seddon has the attitude and approach we need for taking Liverpool’s construction sector forward. They have shown time and again that they are committed to training for the industry, developing their staff and investing in the communities in which they work.

“It is for these reasons and more that I welcome Seddon’s commitment in signing up to our new Construction Charter for Liverpool.”

Seddon has been a long time champion of skills development in construction industry. The company has trained 225 apprentices over the past 10 years and has already received more than 600 applications for its annual intake of apprentices this year.

Tony Costello, Head of Training at Seddon, said: “Seddon committed to raising standards and addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry today which is why we wanted to be the first construction company to sign up to Liverpool’s Construction Charter.

“A high priority in the Charter is for contractors to be offering proper apprenticeships. Providing opportunities is in Seddon’s DNA. Most of our directors began their careers as apprentices and we are looking forward to sharing some of our experience and knowledge to build better construction careers for the youth of this city.
